The Best Marinara Pasta Sauce: Scarpetta
I have to admit I decided to try this pasta sauce because of the packaging. The sturdy plastic screw-top jars (reusable, freezable, microwaveable) somehow imbued the product with a greater promise of gourmet satisfaction than the glass jars surrounding it on the shelf. Sometimes innovative packaging hides a mediocre product, and sometimes it heralds an attention to detail and quality that carries through to the product inside. Scarpetta did not disappoint. The sauce is thick and chunky, with a super fresh, home-made taste. There's no added sugar or thickeners, and it's gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan — including the meatless bolognese variety.
The plastic jar is bpa-free, shelf-stable for 9 months without refrigeration, and is a great size for re-using. Find it at Whole Foods, or order a 4 pack for $18.57 at amazon.com.
