I'm not a big fan of cookware sets.  Your money is better spent buying a few choice pieces of different types of cookware with different strengths.  Cast Iron cookware, with its excellent heat retention and distribution, is good for high-heat searing and extended braising, as well as a couple of classic oven dishes like cornbread and upside-down cakes.  Properly "seasoned" and carefully cleaned, cast iron acquires a natural non-stick coating that improves with age.  Classic, durable and affordable, every kitchen should have one.  The American-made Lodge brand is top-rated by Cooks Illustrated Buy the 12" skillet for $17 at Amazon.com
