The Linksys CIT400: The iPhone You Can Buy Today

No, it’s not the Apple iPhone — the trademark is in dispute between Apple and Cisco, who has owned a 1996-filed trademark since 2000.  The Linksys iPhones are a series of internet telephony products designed for use with VoIP.  The CIT400 is a single-handset cordless phone that allows you to access both your Skype account and a land line.  You plug the base station into your land line (if you have one) and into your cable modem or router; you don’t need a computer present to use it.  The handset rests in a separate charging cradle.  Just log into skype from the handset, and you have access to your skype contacts list, skype voice mail (with indicator light), and skype credit balance for outbound calling. Both Philips and Netgear make similar products, but unless you need a multiple handset unit (Linksys does not support additional handsets) the Linksys phone has the best combination of features, styling and price. It’s $133.60 at Amazon.com.  Coming up tomorrow: headsets for skype calling from your computer.
