Wasabi Peanuts
Although Fire Island is best known for it’s two predominantly gay communities, The Pines and Cherry Grove, it comprises a great diversity of communities and summer residents. Saltaire is popular with upper east siders. Davis Park attracts a high hair/acrylic nails/big boat crowd on the weekends. Point O’ Woods was established as a religious enclave in in 1894, and remains restricted by virtue of Church ownership of its residences. But wherever they live, everyone comes here to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. And while those pleasures run a gamut as wide as the island is long, there is one common denominator: Cocktail hour. Come six-ish, as the sun begins its descent over the Great South Bay, the entire island takes up their one common daily ritual. Some cocktail hours are distinguished by their beverages. One Planters Punch at Low Tea in the Pines is all it takes to start your evening buzzing. (And three is all it takes to bring it to an abrupt end.) Cocktail hour at our house is distinguished by the snacks, and none is more popular than our Wasabi Peanuts. You’ve probably tried Wasabi peas; they’ve been a trendy treat for years now. Well, the Peanuts are so much better. My mother discovered them at Zabars, but when they sold out there, I quickly found a source online. They’re $3.99 a pound from NutsOnline.com, and the perfect way to kick-start your cocktail hour.
