The Best Pizza: Sally’s Apizza
I’m in New Haven, CT this weekend for my college reunion. And as much as I’m enjoying being with my old singing group buddies, and seeing how gracefully — or not — my classmates have aged, the highlight of any trip to New Haven for me is a visit to Sally’s Apizza. This thin-crust pizza is the epitome of pizza perfection, and if you’re traveling to or through New Haven, you owe it to yourself to try it. A few caveats: 1. Go early. The line gets long, and regulars are invited to the front of it, as if they have reservations. 2. Don’t try to make reservations (the publicly listed phone is taken off the hook as soon as they open), or complain about those who have them, it won’t help. 3. "White" pizzas have no tomato sauce. 4. Cheese, or "mootz" as the locals call it, isn’t automatically included. You need to order it as a topping.
Some first-timers don’t get what all the fuss is about. If you’re one of them, try it again… at your own risk. By your second visit, you’ll be hooked.
