The Best Chocolate Caramels: Fran’s Grey Salt Caramels
We were in Mexico with Bruce’s cousin Weezie and her kids, and at one point, the conversation turned to Fran’s Grey Salt Caramels. Fran Bigelow founded Fran’s Chocolates in 1982 in a tiny storefront in Weezie’s Seattle neighborhood. No visit to Seattle was complete without a trip to Fran’s, and Weezie often sent them as gifts to those of us out of town. The jist of the conversation in Mexico was about increasing the shipment frequency. While Weezie and the store have moved to different parts of Seattle, the chocolates are still remarkable, and none more so than the Grey Salt Caramels. The combination of salty and sweet is pure heaven. And thanks to the Internet and FedEx, you don’t need to visit Seattle to enjoy them. Everyone I know prefers the Dark Chocolate, but they do come in Milk as well.
Sounds like Fran has superceded Mrs. Sees, and taken caramels up a notch! By the way, the foodie snob customers at Whole Foods in Chelsea have rejected Fran in favor of foreign sounding named chocolates. They no longer sell Frans: (wracking sobs)
Has Frans also supplanted Sarah Bernhardts as the sentimental favorite?
NYC is leading the way with all sorts of trendy chocolates made with ingredients like wasabi!
Give ME a Kit Kat bar anyday!!!
I ordered some. I love salty and sweet…
p.s. Hi Mrs. Kolber 🙂
