Last week, I tested and recommended laundry detergents; this week, I follow up with stain removal advice.  The best general stain remover, in my experience, and proven by its efficiency in removing the residual dirt from the detergent test, is Oxyclean.  Pour it dry on the stain, add a little water, rub it in, let it sit, then wash. I've even used it to remove old, set-in stains that even chlorine bleach didn't remove. Find it at most grocery and big box retailers, or buy online from drugstore.com.   (Although Oxyclean is safe for most colors, be sure to test it on an
inconspicuous place before using it on a particular fabric for the
first time.)  BTW, Shout edged out Spray 'n Wash in my test, though both did an okay job.
