The Best Oatmeal: McCann’s
Martha loves it. So does Oprah. And so do I. It’s good for you. And the hearty taste and chewy texture are like no other oatmeal you’ve ever had. Look for McCann’s Irish Oatmeal in the metal tin at your local grocery or gourmet store. If you can’t find it, you can order it from Gristede’s Via Amazon, although you’ll pay as much for the shipping as for the oatmeal.
One tip that Oprah neglected to mention, and one caution that you’ll only get from me:
This oatmeal takes a long time to cook, but you can significantly shorten the cooking time by prepping it the night before. Bring the water to a boil, add the oats, turn off the heat, and let it soak overnight. Don’t however, be tempted to buy the Quick Cooking variety. It bears more resemblance to wallpaper paste than the original variety.
I love this stuff – makes a great breakfast on a cold morning. And yes – thanks for telling people about prepping the night before – it really does help!!
once you soak overnight then what do you do to finish cooking in the a.m.??

Martha, Oprah and BillyKnowsBest loves them, and so do I — but not necessarily for the same reasons. You see, oats are the secret ingredient in the famous Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookie recipe. Of course, that is by now
