Better Bowls than Martha’s
The folks at Martha Stewart are running a TV and web feature on Martha’s 20 Essential Kitchen Tools. I’m having fun comparing her list to my own. There’s no question that Martha knows kitchen stuff, but she doesn’t always know best. For instance, she’s promoting an Arcoroc nine-piece glass bowl set. Now the smallest of this set are only essential if you have a staff pre-measuring baking ingredients and leaving them on the counter for you. How do the big bowls compare to mine? Mine come with plastic lids that allow you to store leftovers in them. Hers don’t. Mine are oven-safe. Hers aren’t. And mine have a fluted and scalloped exterior that makes them just a teensy bit more appealing for use as serving bowl. Mine are Pyrex, and I bought the 6-piece set for $19.99 at Amazon.com.
Martha who?
Seriously, these bowls are a really good find on your part. Pyrex has become generic, like Kleenex is to tissues, for original and durable heat proof products. Nothing surpasses their measuring cups. These bowls have the added allure of also being graceful and pretty. They’re good enough for gifting. Two of Martha’s essentials, I don’t consider so: The garlic tube and citrus reamer are really extraneous implements. Just using your hands and a knife is more efficient and easier to clean up! My Kyocera ceramic blades all broke, even on the peeler. Much too fragile. The Oxo peeler works just as well. At the other end of the spectrum, the rasp is a really ingenious discovery for grating.
