Last Summer, I read The The Secret of Scent: Adventures in Perfume and the Science of Smell, a scientific hypotheses about the mechanics of our sense of smell, and how it relates to the perfume business, and Perfumes: The Guide, which evaluated and rated hundreds of fragrances on a one to five point scale.  Few people have the knowledge and vocabulary to describe what makes a smell appealing – most of us just know when we like a smell, and have basic adjectives and associations to describe it.  These books will give you a molecular understanding of smell, and help guide you through the myriad fragrances available.  If all that reading is too much work, here's a cheat sheet selection of Five-star scents from the editors of Allure:
